Voluta Lyria from Somalia

Era circa il 1993, sono passati molti anni dal mio primo incontro con una voluta lyria della Somalia.
Un giorno il mio caro amico Ali mi telefonò (con i primi telefoni mobili gsm) e mi avvisò di un nuovo carico di conchiglie dalla Somalia (aveva un figlio sul posto che lavorava per lui), per telefono mi disse che c’erano anche delle conchiglie “speciali”, io come “speciale” ero abituato oramai a cypraea Broderipii, marginella closia princeps, e anche a chimaeria incomparabils, quindi eccitatissimo andai subito da lui. Ali viveva in una modesta casa vicino alla Stazione termini, che lui aveva denominato “ centro culturale Somalo”. Subito dopo (10 minuti per attraversare Roma :-)) mi fece vedere una bustina con 4 conchiglie, erano delle voluta lyria Lyraeformis, Ali mi disse che venivano dal Sud della Somalia (dopo Mogadiscio) prese da barchette locali, era la prima volta che le vedevo erano scure, larghe, con le costolature più grandi e distanziate, ben diverse dalla classica forma del Kenya .
Scrivo queste quattro righe anche per ricordare un bellissimo ed eccitante periodo in cui il collezionismo Italiano, Europeo e mondiale raggiunsero i massimi livelli di conoscenza, di scoperta ed anche di presenza. Vivere in quegli anni significava vivere in un tam tam di passaparola, in cui si parlava, si leggeva, si fantasticava ancor prima di vedere effettivamente la conchiglia. Le notizie di nuove scoperte arrivavano poche e frammentate e quindi tutti noi aspettavamo con impazienza le mostre di conchiglie per poter finalmente vedere e toccare queste nuove rarità.
Un nota a parte la dedico ad una Voluta Lyria che ho, e che ancora dopo tantissimi anni
non riesco ad identificare : (oramai sono abituato a chiamarla Aurantia .. indovinate perchè ) me la portò Ali dicendomi che era stata presa (viva) da una barca che era uscita dopo due giorni di mare in burrasca , presa con delle reti a strascico, a nord di Mogadiscio, ho aspettato anni per averne un altro esemplare, ma purtroppo non è successo. Scrivo questo per mettere a conoscenza di tutti alcune delle mie esperienze (senza nessuna pretesa scientifica o altro), riguardanti questo fantastico mondo delle conchiglie.
Di seguito elencherò con delle foto le forme della V. Lyria Lyraeformis dalla Somalia
con alcune forme speciali e giganti, scelte fra le moltissime che ho avuto negli anni.

It was around 1993, many years have passed since my first encounter with a lyria from Somalia.
One day my dear friend Ali called me (on the first GSM mobile phones) and informed me of a new shipment of shells from Somalia (he had a son there who worked for him). Over the phone, he told me that there were also some “special” shells. By “special,” I was accustomed to cypraea Broderipii, marginella closia princeps, and even chimaeria incomparabils, so I went to him immediately, very excited. Ali lived in a modest house near Termini Station, which he had called the “Somali cultural center.” Immediately afterward (a 10-minute drive across Rome :-)), he showed me a small bag containing four shells. They were voluta lyria Lyraeformis. Ali told me they came from southern Somalia (after Mogadishu) and were taken from local boats. It was the first time I’d seen them. They were dark, large, with larger, more spaced ribs, quite different from the classic Kenyan shape.
I’m also writing these few lines to remember a beautiful and exciting period in which Italian, European, and global collecting reached the highest levels of knowledge, discovery, and even presence. Living in those years meant living in a world of word-of-mouth, where people talked, read, and fantasized even before actually seeing the shell. News of new discoveries arrived infrequently and fragmentarily, and so we all eagerly awaited the shell shows so we could finally see and touch these new rarities.
A separate note goes to a Voluta Lyria I have, which even after so many years
I can’t identify (I’m now used to calling it Aurantia… guess why). Ali brought it to me, telling me it had been caught (alive) by a boat that had left after two days at stormy seas, caught in trawling nets, north of Mogadishu. I waited years to get another specimen, but unfortunately it didn’t happen. I’m writing this to share with everyone some of my experiences (without any scientific or other pretensions) regarding this fantastic world of shells.
